Has Washington concocted a tale of Iranian terror in order to, a) divert the anger of the American people over the behavior of government leaders and financial officials, b) ruin Iran’s reputation among neighboring states, particularly with Saudi Arabia, c) divert the Arab Spring from following the example of the Iranian Revolution and, d) help Israel out of its current isolation? According to this news item from Iran’s state-controlled Kayhan, all of these motives explain the ‘evil’ fabrication that Iran plotted to bomb and kill the Saudi Ambassador to the United States.
Kayhan quotes quite a number of ministers, offering a wide variety of explanations for the charges. Here are just a few:
Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehiz criticized the United States for its latest “failed game and media campaign” against the Islamic Republic.”
Culture Minister Mohammad Hosseiniz said, “This is a new campaign of propaganda to distract attention from ongoing developments in the region and beyond. Because of the wave of Islamic awakening, the U.S. is losing its regional allies. The U.S. economy is in tatters and Americans have taken to the streets to protest their government’s policies. So they need a way out and that’s exactly what they are doing now. But I must say it is very clumsy.”
Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance Shamseddin Hosseiniz said, “They are publishing this false news attacking us – particularly now, since we are preparing to go to the annual hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia. It’s obvious that they want to undercut our bilateral relations and harm our regional interests.”
Ali Akbar Javanfekrz, press adviser to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejadz, told AFP: “This is a prefabricated scenario to turn public attention away from domestic problems within the United States. … The U.S. government and CIA have a lot of experience diverting public attention from domestic problems in the United States.”
