Yes, it sounds like the plot of second-rate comedy flick. Namely, this one. But Polish President Lech Kaczynski, tragically killed in plane crash, actually does have an identical twin brother Jaroslaw, who may run to replace him.
Almost from the day of the crash, one question dominated political discussions and columns: Will Jaroslaw run?
If he does, opinion polls and analysts suggest Mr. Kaczynski, a former prime minister, would lose…
The Kaczynski brothers were close, colleagues say. Yet they also had very different personalities.
Married, sociable and with a capacity to charm, according to those who knew him, Lech Kaczynski had the broader public appeal. Jaroslaw Kaczynski, who lived with the twins’ strong-willed mother Jadwiga until her hospitalization, was the strategic brain of the duo. More brooding and solitary by nature, he was also a less compromising and more politically polarizing figure.
“I think he will run. I worked with him for a few dozen years,” said Ludwik Dorn, often referred to as the third twin because of his closeness to the Kaczynski brothers, although he in recent years fell out with Jaroslaw. Mr. Dorn said the shock of the plane crash had created a new sense of dignity and seriousness in Polish politics.
