Clinton Pick a Bold Expression of Obama’s Strength: From Die Welt, Germany

There seems to be a chasm opening up between Britain and the Continent over whether Hillary Clinton is a good choice to be U.S. secretary of state. It seems the British are largely - but not universally - convinced that this isn’t a good idea for Obama. On mainland Europe, however, the idea is much more widely seen a wise move by the President elect.

Take for example, this article by Andrea Seibel, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the German Newspaper Die Welt.

Seibel praises the American system and writes in part:

“In times of crises, American culture displays strengths that we Europeans are not capable of. For example humbly bowing to your opponent at a moment of personal defeat and putting oneself at their service - Hillary Clinton did just that (so did John McCain, by the way). These aren’t just empty gestures, but acts of emancipation and humility.

Seibel then asks:

“Clinton would be a tough diplomat, traversing the global stage with self-confidence. That’s a lot for any man - albeit a president - to contend with. … Two strong opponents during the election campaign, magnifying their strength through cooperation and reconciliation. A beautiful and almost idealistic dream. Will it become reality?”

Germany - Die Welt - Original Article (German)

Barack Obama would be taking a wise step if he were to nominate Hillary Clinton to be Secretary of State. She has the international experience, which he lacks, and she would be a strong and credible supporter.

Here she is again: Hillary Rodham Clinton, the woman who always was and will continue to be more than just “the woman at his side,” be it Bill Clinton or now Barack Obama. Rumors are circulating that Barack Obama has offered her the post of secretary of state.

Consider these two individuals and cast your minds back to their historic duel: It was a duel not just between a man and woman, but between a Black man and a feminist woman. It wasn’t the type of contest that would cast her in the role of loser.
