I love it. First Turkey comes in to help and they wind up attacking the Kurds who have been the most effective fighters against ISIS. Now we get the big bear, watch out lambs.

I was wondering when Russia was going to step in more forcefully. I know they were never going to let Assad go down without a fight, as Syria is where their only open access to the Mediterranean is. They have a lot of skin in that game. My only hope is that the non extremist rebels can get some concessions and perhaps an amnesty before the dust settles, and while they still have some clout. Make peaces between those two factions, then turn the focus on Daesh. The best of a horrific situation. How scary is it that a butcher like Assad is the most preferable option?

  • I have always thought that Assad was a tyrant but one of those lesser of evils characters. Who’s likely to replace him? A Wahhabi inspired Sunni. Much worse.

      More likely a Shiite.
      Edit to add; Shiite.

If Assad falls I think it’s clear the biggest most focused fighting force in the region is IS(so yea, a Sunni), that is who would step in and replace him. But again, Russia and Iran aren’t going to let that happen, certainly not Russia. They don’t want to lose their naval base and access to the Mediterranean, and Russia has more than enough resources and skin in the game even now to make sure Assad stays in power if they choose it.
