Most of the left sat back and watched — if that — as the Republicans worked at ground level during the 1990’s, strengthening their party’s roots. State by state, they created a strong base for national wins. Now the Democrats are invading their territory.
A cadre of wealthy liberal donors aims to pour tens of millions of dollars into rebuilding the left’s political might in the states, racing to catch up with a decades-old conservative effort that has reshaped statehouses across the country.

It won’t be easy. And the work will require the kind of tenacity — even obsessiveness — the right has shown but doesn’t, down here at county level in Texas, for example, seem to move Democrats. This is an area where Dems don’t even bother to field candidates.
And, as the Post report points out, the money isn’t there.
Even if donors step up their giving, the left is “not likely to be able to match the Kochs’ money,” LaMarche said. “So therefore we have to be smarter and more strategic.” …WaPo
LaMarche heads Democracy Alliance, a group that connects donors with the cause. Donors are energized and eager, but they don’t add up to even some individual moneybags on the right.
