As a Chicago Cubs fan I am almost required by law to be superstitious about things but we have reached the All Star Break and I find that not only are the Cubs the number one team in baseball but they are also now favored to win the World Series this fall.
People have talked about how this fall could be historic with the election of Senator Obama as President and certainly is possible. However for those of us who have followed our beloved Cubbies for so many years this could finally be the year that we break the curse.
For those not completely familiar with the long suffering record of the boys from Chicago it has been exactly 100 years since our last World Series title. Not only is this the longest drought in baseball but probably the longest drought in pretty much any sporting league in the world.
Legend tells us that this is all the result of the ‘goat curse’ which fell into place in 1945 when a fan came to see the Cubs play in the World Series. He was a bar owner and brought along his pet goat, but the team owner ordered the man thrown out along with his pet. The fan reacted by declaring that the Cubs would never win another World Series and in the 63 years since they have not even made it to the fall classic, let alone win.
But this year may just be the year to break the curse.
So let’s all get out there and cheer….. GO CUBBIES !!!
