This story seems to have been lost amid all the Katrina coverage, including today’s “firing” of FEMA Director Michael Brown, but there’s interesting news coming out of the Ukraine, the site of last year’s bloodless Orange Revolution.
President Viktor Yushchenko — who won a repeat election against his rival, Moscow-friendly Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich, last December after the results of November’s rigged presidential election were overturned by the Supreme Court amid mass demonstrations and protests — has fired both his prime minister and his cabinet in the wake of internal divisions and accusations of corruption.
Whither democracy in the Ukraine? Is Yushchenko merely cleaning house as he continues to promote his country’s westernization, or is this simply the classic case of the democrat turning into a demagogue once in power?
