Barack Obama has taken the occasion of the 38th anniversary of Roe v. Wade to publicly confirm his support for abortion rights:
President Obama said Saturday said he is committed to protecting what he considers a fundamental principle: “government should not intrude on private family [matters].”
Obama, in a brief statement marking the 1973 Supreme Court opinion, said he also remains committed “to policies, initiatives and programs that help prevent unintended pregnancies, support pregnant women and mothers, encourage healthy relationships, and promote adoption.”
[…] … “on this anniversary, I hope that we will recommit ourselves more broadly to ensuring that our daughters have the same rights, the same freedoms, and the same opportunities as our sons to fulfill their dreams.”
Bravo, although I also must add that I would have been even happier if the President had acknowledged the extent to which subsequent court decisions, after Roe v. Wade, have chipped away at abortion rights since 1973.
