A Martian Speaks on What Some Call “Whoredom”

May 1st, 2008 by DR. CLARISSA PINKOLA ESTÉS, TMV Columnist

A small reprise, given Shaun Mullen bringing news of the possibly suspicious suicide of Deborah Jeane Palfrey, 52, recently found guilty of racketeering, money laundering and other charges for running an escort service that drew many customers including one well known government official, Louisiana Senator David Vitter (R).

The small piece of real estate at the V of the human body
If I were from Mars, I would wonder why human beings concentrate so hard on what I once heard another human being refer to as the “real estate” of the body… those ‘parts’ without armor that occur at the V: where legs and torso join.

Modern humans seem to often focus on this one tiny area on their bodies to the exclusion of all the rest of the body.
–What about the ears?
–The head?
–The brain?
– The heart?
There must be something about these other ‘parts’ too, that is as vital to humans as food and water?

But… in fact, perhaps it is the death of the life force flowing through the ‘parts,’ at the V of the trunk of the body, rather than loss of brain or heart activity, that causes a real death of another kind in human beings.

From a Martian point of view, it seems so, given how humans who have experienced sexual ‘bed death’ sometimes seem to walk about like a house with all the lights broken out.

Still, the focus humans place on building barriers and boundaries… about how, when and where those ‘parts’ at the V are used … and by whom, seems odd.

Human beings don’t seem to mind
if people see eye to eye.
They don’t mind if people go toe to toe.
They don’t mind if people are cheek to cheek
or elbow to elbow.

They don’t even seem to mind if this little piece of real estate at the V of the body is groomed, plowed, seeded, exchanged… or mostly whatever else… amongst consenting grown ups, as long as it is accomplished free of charge.

On Earth, money for sex causes huge reactions in humans, while selling the soul for money, or losing the soul because of it, goes without comment

To the Martian mind, it is puzzling that only when money is exchanged over these tiny clefts and prongs of the human body, that humans on Earth seem to fly up into the air with huge flapping excitements and horrifications… usually reserved for chickens…

and suddenly many trackers are summoned to hunt for those who have touched this ‘part’ to that ‘part’ over dimes and dollars… or a king’s ransom.

Meanwhile, the humans who have presumably ‘not done this,’ begin generating stacks of papers and scribes to write it all down in detail, about who by name, and how and where, and how much…

but not much of a reasoned ‘why?’ or ‘how far down does this reach to soul and psyche in the culture, that includes more than just details of ‘parts?’ ‘…and the money to purchase time on, in, over, under, with those ‘parts’…

And the same humans pay battalions of uniformed people a thousand times more money, often, than was exchanged in the one original ‘real estate transaction’ …to arrest these horrible ‘real estate developers’ and make them stop.

As a human, I don’t support the idea that adult females … or adult males be involved in detached endeavors, sexual or otherwise.

The soul knows the difference. And pays the cost in alienation and wounding.

But, were I a Martian, I couldn’t help but notice that, even considering all human moral and protective considerations, it seems that on Earth
–those persons who batter and kill those in ‘the sex trades’
–or who mislead or harm the lives of others there on purpose,
–those who neglect who is fragile and living…
–those who prey on the unwise, the wholly naïve, or foolishly ambitious,
–those who carry others into using the body as an appliance
rather than as the body is in actuality—

these are the points it seems where humans might fail one another…

A great misunderstanding on Earth, is to define the body as made of ‘parts’ and as ‘dumb servant,’ rather than as what is actually is: radiant being…

A Martian mind likely looks at
–the sadness and depression, and fear,
…and the self-medications that many in the ’sex trades’ use in order to
go to sleep
to awaken,
to keep going,

and a Martian mind cannot reconcile that some wish to label this ‘trade’ as mere ‘recreation’ when to call it such means overlooking that those human beings involved ‘in service’ are pressed to be cunning, inauthentic… that those who run them are in abject neglect of other humans, only ever hungry for the quick buck made on the flesh of others while laughing and posturing about how everyone else has their ideas about human suffering in the ‘trade’ all wrong, and only they have it all ‘right.’.

Many human minds too, cannot reconcile ‘parting out a person’ like this, regardless of all claims about ‘the girls love their work,’ ‘I’m saving this fast money for college,’ or to ‘supplement income,’ or to save for one’s old age (”old age” beginning the minute the ‘server’ turns 20).

It doesn’t matter whether ‘the server’ is drugged and beaten, and takes on any man or woman or scenario in exchange for drugs, is pecked out fleshwise from drowning in Meth, has no home, wanders half-dressed in the winter, is demeaned and physically sick, and mentally hurt as well… most humans cannot overlook these, even when the background is filled with furs and fun, penthouses and protections, curative medicines and ‘contacts.’

The destruction to a deeper self is the same.

From a Martian point of view, which may be at least partly angelic… When humans force, seduce, cajole, threaten, thieve, menace, charm other human beings to divide the spirit from the body, and to sever the soul from the mind, blocking deep considerations of these processes, and instead supporting destruction of the core self by the persons involved, the crime most overlooked,…. is not a crime against the GNP, nor against family values.

The use of humans for ‘parts’ only, is a crime against the soul.

There are arguments for legalized selling of parts and people, and in certain areas of the world, it is ‘permitted,’ or overlooked, or legalized. And the arguments pro are several, for many different reasons… some under the banner of ‘freedom,’ some under the banner of ‘adults should do what they want to do,’ some under the banner of “they know what they’re doing,” and some under other banners.

But, I have to draw from knowledge of the devastated mind and heart which I’ve seen time and again from my past work with men and women coming out of the ‘profession’. Their ways ‘in’ to the ‘trade,’ were not made in full knowledge in most cases, but rather through some form of heartbreak, or desperation and a exploiter standing ready…

It’s not to say that some bonds made through the ‘trade’ cannot be real; sometimes both persons who engaged with one another, for pay, have feelings of tenderness for one another, and cling to each other, cherish each other, in many ways, find safe harbor with one another.

But, that is a rarity. In most cases ‘workers’ may have stayed, despite money and endangerment, because of an over-riding longing for a family, or from having nowhere to go, and in many cases, the result of what I’d call ‘inhumane seductions while acting nice’ by those far more wily …who often act under the guise of being motherly, fatherly, or protective lover to one, or many.

However, most of those self-harmed and/or maimed by others, will rarely be seen on television or film.

Sometimes much is put to a person ‘in the trades’ who, on camera, tells how wonderful most of it is for them. And perhaps it is for that set of persons. For most though, it is hell, even when appointed in gold plates and fine linen, any clothes or spas or seeming tiaras one would want, and a smiling papa or mama with a Mammon lack of heart…

People sometimes remain in untenable situations because of shame, dread of being without funds, fear of retaliation, flattened inspiration and dimmed vision about other real options they might work toward, naively wanting ‘a short cut’, and because some still in the ‘trade’ have become like close sisters or brothers that are bound together in common misery and counsel each other, but only by remaining inside the corral… or because though they were encouraged to sell themselves for parts, they are, from any number of causes, now dead…

My two cents worth is that our culture would have to dig down far to unbury all the corpses of the ‘parts’ trade. Worldwide. For these reasons, one is not likely to see the dregs of all these millions of torn stories on TV, rather only those stories of the ‘trades’ that are titillating, recreational seeming, filled with braggadocio.

Though sometimes the conversation about such matters is stopped by someone saying: ‘moral judgments have no place in such discussions’… we’ve done our time, and lived that way nationally for near a decade now—e.g., moral ideas (such as humane treatment of persons, creatures, land, air, water) not allowed to be mentioned very often in illuminating issues nor weighted properly in the shaping of national policies.

Many of us think, we ought try it with reason, the other way. Add moral reason back in. Not soon. Now.
