Over recent days, WORLDMEETS.US has been posting and translating articles about the world’s reaction to the September 11 attacks. Since most were published on Thursday, they’ll continue to dribble in over the next few days.

From Panama’s Critica newspaper, this editorial can be summarized as a plea to ‘fanatics and great powers’ to bring peace to the world, and says that on that day, “history registered the worst attack on humanity.” The editorial also alludes to that ‘other’ September 11 - of 1973 - when Chile’s democratically elected president was toppled in a CIA-sponsored coup.

The editorial says in part:

“After September 11, 2001, the world was never to be the same, but hopefully an act so terrible will never be repeated. Peace must prevail in the world. Fanatics and great powers must understand that the earth’s inhabitants reject war.

“This day also marks 35 years since the military coup against Chilean President Salvador Allende. He was the first Marxist leader to assume power through democratic means.”

Panama - Critica - Original Article (Spanish)

No one can forget that on September 11, history registered the worst attack on humanity. At least six thousand nationals from 40 of the world’s countries died in the attack on the twin towers of the World Trade Center seven years ago.

Today there will be tributes in many parts of the world to remember those who fell in world history’s worst terrorist act. What happened on September 11, 2001 in what is called Ground Zero in New York will enter our minds once again.

Despite the efforts of Washington to strengthen its security, particularly on airlines, some reports indicate that the Northern colossus continues to be vulnerable to chemical, biological, and nuclear attack. Perhaps with the passing of the years, the fear that invaded the world because of the attack perpetrated by religious fanatics has diminished, but the danger lingers.

I have a very conflicted view of our dealings with our neighbors in Central and South America. Maybe someday I'll write a book, which I'm sure no one will read. But the bottom line is this... you think we're politically polarized? Check out Central and South America. Then check out the causes. There are many, but many of those might elucidate why we are becoming more polarized in our own country. The essential question is... to what extent are we in danger of becoming a banana republic ourselves -- and how can we avoid it?

That's what happens when you live in Plutocracy.

    Too late!!!

We started the leap toward Banana Republic when we elected Reagan and we will complete it when we elect McCain.

As long as our leadership is shown "due deference", the press is cowed into a complacent stance, there is no accountability for manipulating our nation into war with forged evidence, and the head of our justice system willingly bows to the politically powerful, we will continue down the path towards becoming a banana republic.
