Pope Francis is interesting.
Today, September 23rd, 2015, he canonized Junipero Serra.
At the oldest and first mission in North America, that was established 250 years ago in San Diego, there were protests.
In 1775, Native Americans revolted and protested. Mayhem fire, and death resulted. Serra rebuilt.
Native Kumeyaay educator and cultural leader Stan Rodriguez said “The mission meant pain”. “The mission meant suffering. Father Serra was the architect of all this. For them to come and say this person is a saint, it’s more than just a slap in the face.”
Saint Christopher, one of the most recognized saints across the world has never been canonized. Nobody did that circa the 3rd century. Oh well.
I like many things about the Pope. Most of all he values the poor and improving their quality of life.
As well, I like that the left and right ideologues cannot glom onto him.
If you try you will win and lose at the same time.
He reminds me a bit of naïve leaders of America.
They were (are) not saints // and neither is Junipero Serra.
