(UPDATED) O’s VP Pick: Hold the Presses

WHAT’S NEW

Biden blows off media speculation about him being the pick. Meanwhile, for every TMV colleague who warned me that my earlier link to an unvetted source (see below) could make me the subject of an elaborate hoax, I can only say, “They might be right.” It seems that hoaxes and the appearance of hoaxes abound as the chosen-one’s hour draws nigh. I guess such wanton manipulation shouldn’t surprise us.

ORIGINAL POST

Contrary to the building hype surrounding Sen. Joe Biden (reference Patrick E’s earlier post) — this unvetted source seems pretty damn sure Obama’s VP pick will be Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.

While the level of the linked post’s credibility re: Sebelius can be questioned — along with its tortuous logic — I’ve long thought Sebelius would be an excellent pick for Obama and have been looking for an excuse to say so. Knowing that my opportunity to make the point will likely be eliminated (or validated) this week, I thought “What the hell? This late in the game, any excuse will do.”

So … why do I like Sebelius? Primarily because she has been an extremely popular — and effective Democratic governor in a Republican-heavy state, earning her stripes on post-partisanship and fiscal responsibility.

Foreign policy experience? Not much to speak of — although I am still not convinced such experience is a prerequisite for Obama’s VP. He can tap adequate foreign policy smarts in his picks for Secretaries of State and Defense.

Net: This independent, semi-conservative voter has reason to hope a wild, questionable prediction from the blogosphere’s outer edge proves prescient.

I agree with you, Pete. I think Sebelius would be a strong choice. The way she has handled the energy debate in her state has been extraordinary. She just didn't just reach across the aisle, she went behind the aisles and pulled support from all sectors. That's the kind of thing Obama stands for most fundamentally. I suspect, however, that in her case the choice would depend upon the internal returns Obama's organization is getting. She's a Dem governor of a red state, which is good. But is she popular enough to actually put Kansas in play? It seems unlikely, but what do I know. From what I've seen and heard of her, she's intelligent, well spoken, experienced (but not top-heavily so), her attitudes largely dovetail well with Obama's, and she's demonstrated herself to be a fighter. The question I have is... how are Hillary supporters likely to respond if she's selected? That seems to me to be more of a wild card than whether she could help to carry Kansas.

My inside information gives me that fact that Hillary Rodham Clinton is going to be Barak Obama's vp choice.

That is why They chose Bill Clinton to speak on the night of the VP announcement.

My insider scoop on McCain is that he is going to nominate Mike Huckabee.

My insider is usually drunk all the time too so if I had to pick for them.

    William Ayers for Obama.
    Larry Craig for McCain.

Neocon, is your insider buying? If so, I'd like a rusty nail.
