Edwards’ Statement

Shaun shared news of the confession, earlier today. Ben Smith reprints Edwards’ complete statement. After reading the latter, reactions to two passages from the statement:

” … being 99% honest is no longer enough.”

I’m not sure it ever was, Mr. Edwards.

It is inadequate to say to the people who believed in me that I am sorry, as it is inadequate to say to the people who love me that I am sorry. In the course of several campaigns, I started to believe that I was special and became increasingly egocentric and narcissistic. If you want to beat me up - feel free. You cannot beat me up more than I have already beaten up myself. I have been stripped bare and will now work with everything I have to help my family and others who need my help.

If only more politicians would speak with such candor when weaving and getting caught in their own webs.

    Before anyone jumps all over Edwards, let's remember that John McCain did the same thing. McCain's first wife and the mother of his children was maimed in a serious car accident while McCain was in Viet Nam. By the time he was released and they were reunited, he was disappointed that she had gained a lot of weight while recovering from her injuries. McCain's affair with the 18-years-younger Cindy went on for months while McCain was still married. McCain and Cindy married one month after his divorce was final.

    I watched the top of "Race to the White House" where the Edwards' affair was being tossed around. Glad that _____ Green mentioned McCain's own adultery for the record.

    But did the entire American news media decide that story would never EVER be reported or referenced? Obviously not.

    Was McCain then a presidential candidate? Did he self-righteously deny the story, wagging his finger in the face of the press?

    Interesting how you Democrats are now insisting on complete revelations of personal lives . . . re: McCain . . . when only yesterday, the personal was private and off-limits to any discussion whatsoever.

    No, he wasn't. Besides the pain and sadness Edwards has caused his wife, his family, and those who supported him, his behavior could have been disastrous for his party. It's almost weird to say, but it appears the Democrats owe the Enquirer a debt of gratitude for breaking the story when they did and keeping the pressure on before he did any more damage.

    I mentioned in a previous topic that I understood why the MSM would be careful with this story. I still believe that. There was too much grey area. I suppose you could say fortunately the Enquirer, the blogs, and the local NC media kept the pressure on.

    So long John. You need to spend a whole bunch of time with your family -- assuming they'll have you, you lying, cheating, arrogant SOB.

    The people fooled by Edwards all along and the Dem-campaigning media can now say "It's Over" (despite the paternity question about the child), nod their heads up and down, and sit down and Say No More (and expect the same from everyone else).
