Libertarian Party picks Bob Barr as presidential candidate

The Libertarian Party on Sunday picked former Republican Rep. Bob Barr to be its presidential candidate after six rounds of balloting.

Barr beat research scientist Mary Ruwart, who was the party’s presidential nominee in 1983 and vice presidential candidate in 1992, by a vote of 324-276 on the final ballot.

Barr endorsed Wayne Allyn Root, who was eliminated in the fifth round, to be his vice-presidential nominee.

Said Barr, celebrate tonight:

…because I’m sure we’ll all leave here with the strongest ticket in the history of the Libertarian Party… Then I want everybody to remember we have only 163 days to win this election. Do not wait one single day.

    Interesting and not really surprising. I think that the Republicans will lose more votes to the Libertarians with Barr as their candidate than the Democrats will lose to Nader this time around.

    I can't help but admit that I'm a little disappointed about the way the Libertarian Convention turned out (see here for balloting results and the individual candidates reactions). Whatever it's faults, if there's one thing that the LP comes through on, it's that when it comes time for the convention, the party generally rallies about the candidate who is a long-time member of the party and holds consistent political positions. Bob Barr (the LP's Presidential Candidate) and Wayne Allyn Root (the LP's Vice Presidential Candidate) were, until very recently, proud Republicans. And until very recently, both espoused some positions that were deeply at odds with the Libertarian philosophy (Bob Barr was a fervent supporter of the War on Drugs and opponent of gay marriage while Wayne Allyn Root was an enthusiastic supporter of the Iraq War). Both have changed their positions to some extent.

    The big winner today, oddly enough, was the Democratic Party. Republicans already had an uphill climb to win the Presidential General Election, and today that climb just got a bit steeper. Bob Barr and Wayne Allyn Root will almost assuredly draw far more votes from McCain than from Obama. I suppose it you're someone who really has it in for Republicans, that's not such a bad thing. But if you're someone who was hoping the Democratic Party would grow a backbone and actually stand for something, a Libertarian Party bearing a diluted anti-war & pro-civil liberties message certainly isn't going to help any.

    im amazed that in order to garner votes, the libertarian party has sold out its principles

    barr is not a libertarian in any shape or form

    but this will draw some votes from mccain
