‘Get ‘er Done’

Though I have certain qualms about trusting the instincts of a guy who ran a campaign that resulted in a spectacular loss, I thoroughly enjoyed this column by Bob Beckel, and nodded frequently while reading it.

Beckel’s is yet another voice in the “pragmatism + nuance = good” camp.

    Yep you need pragmatism plus nuance to get past the fact that Barak Obama went to work as a lawyer for the law firm that represented Tony Rezko mailing out letters to get more money for his slum lord client. You know the client that he cant remember working for.

    Yep youd need lots of Nuance to convince us Barak Obama didnt have much to do with Rezko when by his own admission he talked to him daily.

    Yep you need pragmatism plus nuance to get past the idea that Barak Obama went to Kenya and actively campaigned for a socialist who lost the election then his followers murdered christians in riots while Obama continued to make phone calls from New Hampshire trying to shore up support for his favorite socialist candidate.

    Yep you need pragmatism and nuance to by pass a chruch that is steeped in fringe Black powerism, whose favorite buddy is Louis Farakan and who tries to nuance us with 20 years of weeding that out of the sermons of his pastor.

    Yep you need pragmatism and nuance to overlook that Barak Obama had 12 Tony Rezko projects in his OWN district that never were fixed or repaired and that are now boarded up and the residents on the streets.

    Yep you need a good dose of pragmatism to stomach an UNKNOWN Barak Obama.

    A Black Power, Anti White, Socialist supporting, Far left Rock star who would have us believe that he wants to be moderate. I don't have any swamp land for sale but if I did......Id be so rich by now.

    I very much like this line in the linked essay:

    "What Obama is about is seeking an era where 20th century political polarization will be replaced by a 21st century era of political realism where practical consensus among partisans replaces ideological obstructionism. That is not idealism, it is good politics."

    That does seem to be Obama in a nutshell and not a bad thing to be after years of stagnation. The primary reason people hate Congress is its inability to solve any major problems in the last few year with each party arguing the other is to blame for it. However, I fear this next part of the essay may not be true:

    "That attitude is why charges of flip flopping against Obama will not work. Voters expect the next president to be willing to change his position if necessary to get government moving again. In fact the willingness to change to adapt to new realities is viewed as strong not weak politics. What is weak politics is polarization and inflexibility."

    Flip-flopping charges still seem to work. I assume Beckel must have been part of the decision on Mondale's convention speech where he told the American public that he would raise taxes because it was necessary, betting on Americans acceptance of pragmatism and necessity. That "I will raise taxes" pledge was no small part of Mondale's flop. People of any nation like to be told that life will be better, no sacrifices are needed, and "I will fight for your values" as long as I am in office no matter whether or not those values are succeeding with anything.
