In the early days of blogging Friday was a day to do pet blogging. As near as I can tell this has rarely been the case at TMV. When I was growing up we had both a cat and a dog and I must admit I never bonded with either of them. After at returning from 3 years in Germany I volunteered at the local Zoo’s raptor program. It was strange, I had a way with birds and even those that could hurt me didn’t. I eventually got a holding permit from the Federal Fish and wild life service to keep raptors at my home. My first ward was a Sparrow Hawk that although healthy was very much insane and would attack humans for sport. Needless to say he could not be released. He and I became great fiends. He normally lived in my bedroom and would fly down on my chest in the morning and nibble on my cheek to wake me up. My other ward was a Red Tailed Hawk who had been shot in the wing and could no longer fly. I took care of him him for 3 years and then he was adopted by a wild life museum. Five years later I visited the museum and he remembered me and gently nibbled on my hand. One of the most touching moments of my life.
When I gave up the raptor program I got a Cocktiel, Buzzy . He was my friend and companion for over 23 years.. I don’t know what is about me and birds but scrub jays will still land on my hand and take a peanut from finger.
