While we here in the US are speculating over Presidential running mates a number of events unfold overseas.
In Pakistan the death toll from the double suicide attack on an armaments plan continues to rise and may exceed 100. This attack was carried out by a Pakistani branch of the Taliban and is hardly helpful with the recent resignation of President Musharraf already an issue in the country.
Nearby in Kashmir we see old rivalries once again surfacing and while this often does not get a great deal of attention in the western media it is probably one of the three or four places in the world where we could see a major conflict erupt and lead to the use of nuclear weapons.
In Spain the death toll is already over 150 in the crash of a passenger jet earlier this week. Relatives off the victims are continuing to try to identify their loved ones while King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia met with the families of the dead.
In Zimbabwe they are trying to work out some sort of arrangement for a semi-stable government though given the domestic and international opposition to ‘President’ Mugabe this will be a tall order.
In Georgia we have conflicting reports as to whether or not Russian troops are going to withdraw or not. Interestingly this crisis comes on the 40th anniversary of the invasion of Czechoslovakia by the old Soviet Union. Time will tell how close thse two events will end up being.
I would welcome any other foreign news stories that our readers think worth discussing.
