I have had a Shell Credit Card since 1985. These days I pay almost all of my bills through PNC’s online banking and I typically make payments to Shell through PNC. I have tried on and off for years to get Shell to bill directly to my PNC Online Banking. Today PNC offered me that option if I provided my name as listed on the card and the last 4 digits of my SSN. I tried this twice and it did not work and suggested that I phone Customer Service.
I dislike handing out my SSN because back in the 90s somebody stole it and used it fraudulently.
I called Customer Service for Shell Credit Card (through Citigroup) and discovered that they do not think they have my SSN on file. Unfortunately, the only way I can ‘give’ it to them is to snail mail or fax a copy of my Social Security Card AND Driver’s License to Shell. She tells me, “You have to provide an SSN to get credit.” I’m not asking for credit. I am asking for the bills to go directly to the account which pays them!
Although it is not this lady’s fault, this is poor customer service from a nonsensical system.
