Every political rally worthy of the name needs a chant. For this coming election season I’d like to suggest one for folks at Democratic Party get-togethers. A chant that perfectly reflects the actions and attitudes of their president and congress: “No We Can’t!”
Ready to practice for the coming political rally season? Here we go.
When our conservative friends on the right say “change” they mean change big time. Should we mean that, too?
“No we can’t!”
If change means not only denouncing special interests but taking away their most important and profitable special perks, should we even try to do that?
“No we can’t!”
Should we heavily levy taxes on this country’s richest citizens, those who have made out so wonderfully in recent years, in order to pay for desperately needed help for poor Americans, help to fund infrastructure improvements, help reducing national indebtedness?
“No we can’t!”
Should we stop soiling ourselves every time someone utters the word “socialism,” and recognize that government programs that assist the needy and the struggling middle class are good, are the traditional American way, are not “the enemy?”
“No we can’t!”
Can we stop pretending that the same people who ran the Clinton Administration are the right ones to run the present one in these very different times, and that Clinton-era policies won’t work today?
“No we can’t!”
Can we stop taking the advice of big-time experts generally just because so many of them have proven so incredibly wrong in the past?
“No we can’t!”
Can we finally, finally, finally dispense with the belief that alternative energy is a great idea, but its large-scale use is decades down the road, and really, really get down to pursuing this approach to energy independence?
“No we can’t!”
Prepare yourself to shout this chant loud, Democratic rally goers, because while conservative rallies this year are going to be big and boisterous, yours this time around are likely to be quite small. Every one of these shouted chants will thus have to compensate for one-time enthusiasts who are going to stay away in droves this year because you let them down so badly.
