NJ Republican candidate for US Senate, Tom Kean, called on Haster to step down immediately. By doing so, Kean is the first major Republican candidate who publicly attacks Speaker of the House Dennis Haster and, thus, breaks with what seems to be the party-line.
To me, it seems that the most important Republicans make a huge mistake by publicly supporting Dennis Hastert. Whether all reports about his supposed knowledge are 100% accurate or not is irrelevant. Hastert is US House Speaker, we can be quite sure that he – at least – knew more than he was willing to admit at first and he is, quite simply, responsible – it happened, as Kean put it, under his watch. Accountability is incredibly important in politics, in every democracy. By supporting Haster publicly and instead of demanding accountability, Republican leaders are sending a message that they are something like a Brotherhood: protect thy brother against everything and everyone.
