Newt Gingrich will be speaking at Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University on Wednesday, on the subject of “Rediscovering God in America.” Digby quotes from a statement Gingrich gave about the upcoming speech to a local Lynchburg, Virginia, paper:
“Our republic is in jeopardy, and the only way to save it is a return to the principles upon which this nation was founded … Our founders further believed that God and an adherence by the people to Judeo-Christian values were essential to the survival of our republic.”
She adds:
Gingrich understand very well who the real foot soldiers in the conservative movement are. Some of them may wear tri-corner hats and wave around the constitution, but it’s the Bible that governs their views.
Remember, this is the same man who is so convinced that Muslims are going to impose their religious values on Americans that he supports legislation forbidding Oklahoma’s courts to use Sharia law (or international law), and wants a federal law to prevent all the courts in the country from using Sharia law (and international law). One would think that Gingrich, terrified as he is about being oppressed and controlled by other people’s religions and other countries’ laws, would be the last person to declare that “God and an adherence by the people to Judeo-Christian values” are “essential to the survival of our republic.” Even, of course, if he had a clue what Judeo-Christian values are, or could accurately name one.
But just as clearly, that is why most people are so repelled by the man, as digby points out.
