Earlier today, my fellow co-blogger Holly reported on a Chicago Tribune article that suggests that Bush will nominate either Alito or Luttig — perhaps as early as today (but, I would think, more likely early tomorrow morning to set up the week’s news cycle).
I’ve got more on these two “leading” candidates over at The Reaction, including a link to a positive take on Luttig that I wrote back in July, before Roberts was nominated.
As some of you know, I generally find myself on the center-left, still moderate enough to be very comfortable here at TMV but still quite uncomfortable with the extremism of certain constituencies on the right. Yet I must say that Alito and Luttig both seem to me to be suitable nominees for the Supreme Court. That doesn’t mean that I’ll end up supporting either one, should either one be nominated, but I think it’s important post-Miers to keep our minds open — as long as Bush nominates a conservative with a solid judicial record and the personal and intellectual stature to sit on America’s highest court.
More here on who might replace Miers to replace O’Connor.
