Remember “New Coke” a few decades ago. What was “New Coke” all about? In reality it was about the switch from cane or beet sugar to high fructose corn syrup. It is thought by many medical researchers that high fructose corn syrup is in part responsible for the obesity epidemic in the United States. Glucose makes you feel full fructose does not. There would not be a big gulp without high fructose corn syrup – no body could drink the entire thing if it was sweetened with cane sugar.
So why did the food industry move to high fructose corn syrup? In part it was because of unwise tariffs placed on cane sugar but it was soon discovered that high fructose corn syrup was very manufacturing friendly – it could be transported by tankers and pipes.
Mexican Coca Cola is still made with cane sugar. Costco has been selling it for years and it has proved to be very popular. They actually got into a battle with Coca Cola America and Costco won. I went to my local Albertsons yesterday and much to my amazement I found that they too were selling Mexican Coca Cola.
