It came across my Facebook timeline, as most of these things do.
I read the report, Sean, and there’s nothing in there at all that says we tortured these terrorists. If anything we fed and cared for them, just as Jesus would have.
– Michele Bachmann, Sean Hannity Radio, 12/10/14
The source: Stop the World, the Teabaggers Want Off.
First, Michele Bachmann was not a guest on Sean Hannity Radio on December 10, 2014, according to the daily recap.
Nor was she there on the 11th. Or 12th.
Second, on December 10 she did deliver her last speech as a U.S. Representative. That’s the only entry on her Facebook page for the day. No Hannity.
The next entry on her Facebook page is from December 12. She shared a status update from the Republican Women’s Policy Committee.
Third, there is nothing on the Teabaggers Want Off Facebook page that states these quotes are intended to be parody, but a quick sample makes it clear that this must be the case. I couldn’t verify these quotes through Google, so I went to the media archives:
- Sarah Palin quote: not listed on November 25, 2014 Hannity Radio summary
- Michele Bachmann quote: It’s true that Allen West is on PJMedia, but if there was a broadcast on December 8, I’ll not be paying to see it.
- Ben Carson quote: unsourced claim on Daily Kos
- Glenn Beck quote: Beck accuses the AP of “media rape” but not in the manner expressed by StopTheTeaParty and there’s no “money-grubbing” claim
I wasn’t the first person to wonder about thia Facebook meme.
Big reminder: if something seems too good or too bad to be true, chances are that it isn’t! Step away from the keyboard, don’t hit that share/forward/retweet button. Do your own research.
Engage brain, not knee (jerk).
Together we can stop fake memes in their tracks.
