Senator McCain in The Outer Limits…

Color me amazed at the exchanges between Senator McCain and two supporters (well, I don’t know if they will support him after this; thanks to Allahpundit at Hot Air for the video):

I’m 34 years old. So I haven’t been around long enough to see many presidential elections. But has this ever happened before with a presidential candidate; where he/she rhetorically rips the spine out of one or more supporters on national television? That’s what McCain did in the video clip. They expressed their fears of Obama (unjustified in my opinion but the fears are deeply legitimate to them) to McCain and he basically scolds them for that fear. Color me amazed squared.

Part of me is saying, “What in the heck are you doing, McCain! Those folks are your base!”. Another part of me feels McCain is a damn brave soul for going after his supporters in front of the camera like this. Either way, the McCain Campaign has entered The Outer Limits of Politics. They Who Control What We See are giving us good stuff:

They have to be. Because I’m totally bamboozled at the turn of events in the presidential race these past several weeks.

    What a nauseatingly transparent attempt to backpeddle.

    They've incited violence. Plain and simple. They've broken the law in time of war and I'd like to see both him and Palin publicly admonished for de facto terrorist abetting.

    And I'd like to see Barney Frank and Chris Dodd investigated by Congress for being bribed [or in Frank's case, having his "husband" as Asst. Administrator of Fannie Mae] to perpetuate the RICO-style kickback scheme that FanFred became for many prominent Dem operatives like Raines, Johnson, and Gorelick. Jimmy Carter engendered the CRA and Clinton continued this socialistic scheme to force banks to make risky loans that were backed by FanFred. FanFred choked on all the toxic mortgage paper and brought down the unlucky banks silly enough to buy into this cock-eyed Dem Ponzi Scheme.

    That's the biggest economic crime of the century to this date. And it's a scandal that Dodd & Frank, who blocked Bush's '05 initiative to investigate the massive fraud [with the help of many co-dependents both Repub and Dem], are the chief culprits, yet are sanctimoniously posing as investigators and blame Wall Street for buying into their crooked kickback scam.

    It's simply breathtaking to watch the McCain campaign implode so spectacularly.

    First they stir up this hate, alienate everyone not a Hannity'ite nutcase. Then they meekly "backpeddle" as Silhouette says, and now risk alienating what's left of their voting base.

    Second, their Veep nominee is found to have abused power in Alaska by a bipartisan committee.

    What's important now is how they plan on losing in these last three weeks. Will they do it with grace, or will they keep stoking the fires of hate and ignorance?

    If McCain wants to regain a portion of his honor, he needs to clearly repudiate the message of his campaign for the last couple of weeks. He needs to convince his supporters that Obama is not their enemy. He needs to stop running all of these ads connecting the word "terrorist" to "Obama."

    McCain's got a lot of work to do. Winning the election shouldn't be his top priority anymore, healing the damage he's done should be.

    T-Steel, while I am only 35 myself, I think it's fairly routine for a candidate to have to calm his crowd down. However, normally, it takes the form of a cheer at some wrong moment, and the candidate has to say "no, no, c'mon now, it's time to get past..." or whatever. This, however, is rather unusual because of the raw emotion in the crowd and how many of them don't trust their candidate when he tries to calm them down.

    Daveinboca, could you kindly point us to the language in the CRA that requires lenders to make stated-income, no-escrow, payment-option loans to anyone? There's a big difference between subprime lending and stupid lending.

    As far as the 2005 Fannie/Freddie legislation, are you aware of how Congress works? Barney Frank was in the minority until Jan. 2007 - and in the U.S. House, when you're in the minority, you don't block squat. Incidentally, if you check the Congressional Record, you'll find that he supported the bipartisan bill that emerged from committee, but voted against it because the Republican leadership slipped in language that pissed all over the First Amendment. The bill passed the House with 331 votes anyway, so no harm done by Barney Frank there. No harm done by Chris Dodd either, because the Republican Senate leadership never bothered moving the bill - and being in the minority, Dodd certainly couldn't have moved it himself.

    Any "investigation" of Frank's & Dodd's role in blocking GSE reform can be easily opened & closed in about ten minutes by skimming through the Congressional Record. I suggest you try it.

    Exactly. I'm used to the "c'mon now, calm down" angle. But not this. It's like you could hear what those two supporters were thinking: TRAITOR!! Wow!

    Just imagine what kinds of things the supporters who WON'T stand up in a crowd are saying privately to McCain, Palin or their campaign workers. Imagine what they are saying to each other. When this is the kind of thing being said out in the open, you're looking at the tip of an iceberg that goes DEEP.
