I know it’s been a while since I posted regularly and I hope that once I get past tax season that I’ll have more time to write (assuming of course anyone wants to read my ramblings, both right wing and left wing depending on who you ask).
But I had to take some time to mark the 50th anniversary we celebrate this week, the conquest of space by human beings.
On 12 April 1961 (11 April in many parts of the Western Hemisphere) Yuri Gagarin became the first human being to orbit the Earth. His voyage was frought with danger and according to some reports over the years he came close to being the first fatality in space.
But he came home and in doing so blazed the path for all to follow.
At the time of course we in the United States could not or would not celebrate the success of our Cold War rivals, any more than the Soviets could truly celebrate our subsequent voyage to the moon.
However 50 years later, as the nations of the world join together in space, we can join hands across the globe and celebrate the triumph of the past and hope for more cooperation in the future.
