How good of a no limit hold ’em poker player would Barack Obama make if we were to dump him into the World Series of Poker tour with the likes of Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu and the rest of their crew? Don’t ask me how I launched off on that tangent this week, but it’s the premise of my latest column at Pajamas Media, “Obama Just Doesn’t Know When to Fold ’em.” Whether it’s foreign or domestic policy, the Democrats were handed quite a few strong hands when they swept into nearly absolute power this year. Unfortunately, as the cards played out, some of them began to fall apart. The key to successful politics, much like poker, is sometimes to know when to lay your cards down and wait for a better hand. This, I’m afraid, is a skill which the President hasn’t quite mastered yet. That may change tonight with the much anticipated Afghanistan announcement. I’ll hold off for the most part until I hear the details, but the initial hints are not promising.
