Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is scheduled to perform a same sex wedding ceremony today. It is the first ever such ceremony presided over by a Justice of the U. S. Supreme Court. The ceremony will take place at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, marrying Michael Kaiser and John Roberts. No, not that John Roberts. Ginsburg agreed to officiate at the request of Michael Kaiser.
Ginsburg, now 80, has been in the news recently for insisting that she will not resign from the Court so long as her health and mental faculties allow her to perform her duties. She, along with her friend Antonin Scalia, are opera fans and frequently are present at the Kennedy Center.
Michael Kaiser is President of the Kennedy Center and a long time friend of Justice Ginsburg. The Justice also has plans to officiate at another same sex marriage in September. Of performing the ceremony, Ginsburg said,
“I think it will be one more statement that people who love each other and want to live together should be able to enjoy the blessings and the strife in the marriage relationship…”
