Hopes were high when Barack Obama was elected that it was the triumph of the Democratic Party over the Republican Party, which left the United States with grave problems on several fronts. But now amid poll numbers showing a likely rout at the polls in November the question needs to be asked: Have the Democrats blown it for a generation?
