Green New Deal: The Democratic Party’s Folly

The proposed Green New Deal is the Democratic Party’s folly. To understand why, just read the following excerpt from Naomi Klein’s commentary The Game-Changing Promise of a Green New Deal:

“For the first time, I see a clear and credible political pathway that could get us to safety, a place in which the worst climate outcomes are avoided and a new social compact is forged that is radically more humane than anything currently on offer.

We are not on that pathway yet — very far from it. But unlike even one month ago, the pathway is clear. It begins with the galloping momentum calling on the Democratic Party to use its majority in the House to create the Select Committee for a Green New Deal, a plan advanced by Ocasio-Cortez and now backed by more than 14 representatives.

The draft text calls for the committee, which would be fully funded and empowered to draft legislation, to spend the next year consulting with a range of experts — from scientists to local lawmakers to labor unions to business leaders — to map out a ‘detailed national, industrial, economic mobilization plan’ capable of making the U.S. economy ‘carbon neutral’ while promoting ‘economic and environmental justice and equality.’ By January 2020, the plan would be released, and two months later would come draft legislation designed to turn it into a reality.”

. . . and . . .

“Pulling that off, the report’s summary states in its first sentence, is not possible with singular policies like carbon taxes. Rather, what is needed is ‘rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society.’ By giving the committee a mandate that connects the dots between energy, transportation, housing and construction, as well as health care, living wages, a jobs guarantee, and the urgent imperative to battle racial and gender injustice, the Green New Deal plan would be mapping precisely that kind of far-reaching change.”

Congressional Democrats are correct to want to weaken the blanket effect that carbon in the atmosphere has on planet Earth. Even Republicans and conservatives can see the benefit of weakening that blanket effect.

However, weakening that blanket effect is not the goal of the Green New Deal. Instead, the goal is to transform the USA into the United Socialist States of America.

From the 13 December 2018 editorial of Investor’s Business Daily:

“Things must be pretty bad in the Democratic Party if outgoing California Gov. Jerry Brown thinks the party is out of touch with mainstream America. But then again, look at what the party’s new socialist darling, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, is now successfully pushing.

In a radio interview this week, Brown said that the Democratic Party has gone “further out than I think the majority of people want.” Brown was talking mostly about his own state’s Democrats, which now completely dominate the state government and might go off the deep end.

But the observation applies equally to Democrats outside the Golden State. As IBD has been observing for years, the Democratic Party has lost its mooring and has been drifting steadily to the extremist left.”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Democrats like her demonstrate why America still needs the Republican Party. The GOP is far from perfect, but at least it can apply the brakes to the folly that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her kind are promoting.
