Great news for political junkies: the pundit and writing genius Michael Kinsley is returning to The New Republic. This time as editor-at-large.
Two words about this. I’ve been a huge fan of Kinsley’s analyses because they weren’t cookie-cutter analysis columns, could not be confused with a print version of what was on cable TV or on a left or right talker (or in a blog post). Secondly, my grandfather, the late Nathan Gandelman, who I never met (he died while driving to see my father Richard Gandelman as my father was about to go overseas during World War II), LOVED The New Republic and read every issue. I started reading it in high school and have followed it in all of its incarnations under different editors and ownership.
So there is double good news: (1)Kinsley will have a hand in this new incarnation of The New Republic (which already has a strong web presence), and, (2)Kinsley will write from time to time (he has been writing a column for Bloomberg) which means people like me (and younger than me) have a journalistic role model (I write a weekly column for Cagle Cartoons) and also some great material to link to and discuss — since there are always original ideas and a unique take from Michael Kinsley.
Joe Gandelman is a former fulltime journalist who freelanced in India, Spain, Bangladesh and Cypress writing for publications such as the Christian Science Monitor and Newsweek. He also did radio reports from Madrid for NPR’s All Things Considered. He has worked on two U.S. newspapers and quit the news biz in 1990 to go into entertainment. He also has written for The Week and several online publications, did a column for Cagle Cartoons Syndicate and has appeared on CNN.
