Since yesterday, Worldmeets.US has posted articles from two more German newspapers about the Colorado attacks.
1) The NRA: America’s ‘Deadliest’ Lobby (Die Tageszeitung, Germany)
Is there any sense to the logic of the National Rifle Association, which asserts ‘If private gun ownership were restricted, it would be more difficult for law-abiding citizens to obtain guns; but criminals would have no problem’? Columnist Bernd Pickert of Germany’s Die Tageszeitung dissects the NRA’s party line, and what he perceives as its flawed logic:
“It seems rather self-evident that it is the unrestricted access to these lethal instruments that produces criminals in the first place. If one is capable of simply walking into the nearest shop to secure everything needed for a mass-murder-in-waiting, the path from depression to blood-soaked headline is rendered easy.”
2) Movies Reflect Violence in Society – Not the Other Way Around (Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Germany)
Are made-in-America films and video games causing the type of violence we have seen in places like Aurora, Columbine and Virginia Tech – or are these movies and games simply a reflection of what was already there? For Germany’s ‘Sueddeutsche Zeitung’, columnist Fritz Goettler questions the entire basis of the ongoing debate over gun violence.
“America will once again debate concerns and allegations that have grown up around violence in movies or video games, and the all-too-easy access to firearms. … The dispute could be more aggressive this time, amid the crisis atmosphere of a demoralized, polarized America. The film reflects the brutal truth: the exhibitionism of violence it displays is taken directly from society.”
