Are we at peak Mitt Romney and if so does this mean the Republican presidential nomination will be Rick Perry’s to lose?
That is a scrumdiddlyumptious prospect for Obama supporters because the former Massachusetts governor is scary in a bad way — well spoken, intelligent and full of moderate ideas — while the Texas governor is scary in a good way — a stumblebum orator, an innate ability to usually hide his intelligence and full of dump ideas.
As it is, with the first nominating caucuses and primaries only two months away, eight in 10 Republican voters say they have not decided who to support while only four in 10 say they are paying a lot of attention to the campaign, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll.
Herman Cain is in a statistical dead heat with Romney, according to the poll, but the smart money recognizes that the former pizza mogol is enjoying a boomlet as did Michelle Bachmann and The Donald before him. The poll found that support for Perry has weakened, and that is likely because of Cain picking up supporters when he became the flavor of the week.
I expect that Perry will get back much of the support that he has lost, especially since he has made it clear he sides with the birthers over the non-issue of whether Barack Obama is a true American, while Romney will further fade in the eyes of the party’s lunatic fringe base unless he pulls a wacko rabbit out of his hat.
The prospect of Perry possibly being able to lock up the nomination is giving group agita to Karl Rove and the mainstream Republicans who clearly understand that crappy economy or not, Obama can make mincemeat of Perry.
