We all tend to focus on stories in our own country so I thought I’d post just a few of the stories that are making news overseas.
In Brazil while the economy around the world remains sluggish the people of this South American nation are enjoying a boom thanks in part to efforts to balance the left and the right in management of the economy. But the government does make mistakes, like releasing convicted murders on weekend passes.
In the United Kingdom we continue to see internal battle within the ruling Labour party over whether or not PM Gordon Brown will remain in power or not. The party has suffered serious losses in recent months though this is more due to fatigue than anything Brown has done (the party has been in power since 1997).
In Georgia the civil war between the central government and the breakaway enclave of South Ossetia things have grown more violent in recent weeks.
In Maritania things remain chaotic since a coup which overthrew the elected government earlier this week. The US has cut off aid and many European nations are expected to follow suit.
In Pakistan we see US ally President Musharraf facing possible impeachment at the hands of the hard line Islamic ruling coalition in Parliament.
In China things move forward for the Olympics and we are seeing somewhat mixed stories. President Bush quite properly condemned the human rights abuses and the government of China told him where to stick it. Meanwhile Bush dedicated the new US embassy in Beijing.
