After talking to a dear friend I served in the military with I started thinking – always a dangerous thing in my case. Yes, I’m going to get a bit philosophical on you and apologize in advance. There are times I feel sorry for those who never served in the military because there is nothing like the bonds that develop between individuals that serve together. My late father remained in contact with and close to many of those he served with in WWII. As a Vietnam war era veteran I have had similar experiences. It’s true that I was never even close to SE Asia and we had it pretty easy it didn’t mean that bonds didn’t develop. My best friends are still people I served with during that period and although we may live on separate coasts and rarely see each other we still frequently talk on the phone after all these years. The bond is still there and it’s unlike any other bond I have had in my life. I can’t really explain it and won’t even try but it’s there. One of my best friends is probably someone I would never had any contact with if not for the military, He is on the east coast and I’m on the west coast. He attended exclusive prep schools and went to Ivy league colleges while I attended public schools and went to a state university. But we can spend hours on the phone discussing history, philosophy and science.
Esprit De Corp is forever. Sorry if I bored you.
