In the mind’s eye of the armchair tourist, historic Southwestern sites are far from man’s long and sometimes destructive reach. That is sometimes the case, but not so with Hovenweep, a cluster of ancient Pueblo ruins in the Utah desert that is adjacent to ranches, farms and orchards.
For the most part, those neighbors have been respectful of Hovenweep, the nearby Canyons of the Ancients National Monument and two wildlife sanctuaries, but this beautiful area is now being rocked by a proposal to build a dump for toxic gas exploration and drilling wastes that would be the largest such site on the Western Slope.
Please read the whole sordid story at Kiko’s House or The Clade, a new community environmental blog, and visit the Hovenweep Alliance website to see how you can help.
