Celebrity Scandals Now Spread On The Internet

May 5th, 2007 by JOE GANDELMAN, Editor-In-Chief

This Entertainment Tonight video clip of an apparently intoxicated David Hasselhoff shot by his daughter has received nearly 1,000,000 views so far on You Tube:

This shows the “synergistic” nature now of the “old media” and the new media. In addition to being on You Tube, it’s also posted www.TheInsiderOnline.com

PS, Mr. H: This video is probably not a positive career move…

UPDATE: This Extra Exclusives shows a bit more — and puts it into a more more enlightening perspective:

And the value of this video is…? We are to be enlightened just how? I don’t ordinarily think that a post on TMV is worthless, I may or may not agree, but I usually see some purpose to it, but I fail to see the purpose of these videos. I think maybe it’s that the comments that go with them are too brief. There are many better examples of the “new media” phenomenon than to see a washed out star drunk off his ass humiliated before the entire world. There are countless examples of videos taken by citizens that make it on to youtube first, and CNN later (the kid beaten in UCLA comes to mind) that could serve this purpose better than this display of degeneracy.

To prevent any discussion on the matter Joe, I completely recognize that it’s your blog and you can put on it what you damn well please, regardless of what the rest of us think. But since there IS a comments section I think it’s fair to give my evaluation, which is that the posting of these videos is below the ordinarily dignified level of this blog, unless some social commentary is added to shed some light as to why they should be seen.

Actually, I do respect your comments on this but this grabbed me for another reason. I have been driving and traveling extensively since Sunday and have not been able to get on the internet much at all. I always vist You Tube and was shocked see nearly 1 million visits to this video. I had also heard four radio talk shows (conserative and one progressive) raise this issue which is why I looked for the video. Also, in doing a google search you could see it was all over the place. Plus, when you then look further it is being featured on two television shows. PLUS when you really examine the circumstances, he’s in the middle of bitter custody fight…and this is coming out. So there is something about this surfacing in our society right now and the way that now something like this comes out and it isn’t just a matter of it surfacing on a tv show but it hits on several fronts — radio (references to it), television, search engines and video.

It’s also instructive that the first video does not provide interent viewers with the context and the information about how this video was done. So yes this is not usually what I will post on TMV but this video and the way it is getting “out there” shows something about our new age.

If this had been 10 years ago, it would have surfaced a bit on one of the tv shows and then broken with screaming headlines in the supermarket tabloids and then perhaps warrented a mention in one of the now-downsized or gone newspaper gossip columns.

Now, with incredible speed, the images are out there — some of them not even with a contextual explanation.

LOL Joe your being PC (”apparently intoxicated”) the fool was hammered, stewed or other such cliches. His BAC would probably kill most normal people.
