There have been a swarm of earth quakes on the subduction zone zone off the Oregon coast the last 24 hours.
Five quakes 6.0 to 4.3 off Oregon Coast since Sunday
NEWPORT, Ore. – Strong earthquakes rumbled off the Oregon coast overnight Sunday and into Monday, but they appeared too distant to cause any problems. The most recent one to hit was a magnitude 6.0 earthquake at 1:12 p.m. Monday off the Oregon Coast, according to The U.S. Geological Survey.
Before that, a magnitude-5.8 temblor struck close by, shortly before midnight. It was centered in the Pacific nearly 300 miles west of Newport.
The last major (9.0) subduction zone earthquake off the Oregon coast was about 300 years ago and we know this because the resulting tsunami was recorded in Japan. These quakes are too off shore to be felt or have an impact inland.
