One of the most difficult things we face in life is the possibility of error.
Nobody likes to be wrong and it is only natural to want to avoid admitting it, even when we know failing to do so often makes things worse.
I sometimes wonder about this in my own life.
Why is it we are so reluctant to admit that we, as a human being, have acted like a human being ?
I am reminded of what I call the server rule.
Assume you are in a restaurant and you place your order. You wait and nothing happens. Your server is nowhere to be seen or if they do come by they offer vague responses to your questions. In time they come to you and claim that the chef screwed up your order.
Now you know that this is probably not true.
How do you react ?
On the other hand assume the server comes over and admits that thet screwed up. They apologize.
The odds are you will be understanding and let it pass, because they were good enough to admit the error.
And when you make a mistake the chances are if you admit it most people will react in the same way. Yet we won’t do that.
Why ?
Or why is it we are far more willing to forgive a stranger than a friend or family member ?
Just some musings for the weekend
