Andrew Sullivan reminds us that some individuals on the Right are quick to defend the late Jerry Falwell, arguing that the balance of his record outweighs a handful of inflammatory, hateful comments he made. These same individuals are equally quick to condemn Jeremiah Wright on a handful of inflammatory, hateful comments he made, regardless of the balance of his record.
Unfortunately, there are more than a few on the Left who are willing to do the same in reverse.
If nothing else, the Obama-Wright conundrum should serve as a reminder to all of us that the character of any given person is not defined by the worst things he or she might say, but by the totality of said person’s life.
Translation: He who is without sin, cast the first stone.
