Donald Trump is his own worst enemy. That is the gist of the criticism of Trump coming from people who are glad that Trump became the 45th POTUS instead of Hillary Clinton but who are also dismayed by Trump’s behavior.
In particular, it is his mouth – either by speech or via tweets – that gets him into trouble.
Town Hall political editor Guy Benson writes, “As far as impeachment and obstruction are concerned at this point, Trump has the facts on his side, even if he looks like an ignorant, meddling boor. He should pound those facts, not delve into non-credible bravado. But he can’t help himself.”
The Hill quotes Senator Lindsey Graham as saying to President Trump, “You may be the first president in history to go down because you can’t stop inappropriately talking about an investigation that if you just were quiet, would clear you.”
From CBS News, 06/11/17:
Chicago Tribune columnist Steve Chapman writes, “The White House can dispute what the president said in one-on-one conversations with Comey, though Trump’s long habit of pathological lying does not give him an advantage in the credibility contest.”
Then there is this from National Review columnist Kevin D. Williamson:
President Trump’s ham-handed approach to his job is troublesome for the GOP to say the least, but, according to Senator Marco Rubio, it should have been expected by those who voted for Trump.
From CBS News, 05/21/17:
In short, the Trump who now occupies the Oval Office is the same Trump that people saw on the campaign trail in 2016.
Trump won in part because voters hoped that Trump’s presidency wouldn’t be like his campaign. Those who voted for him weren’t certain what they would be getting from a “President Trump”. They only knew that Hillary Clinton was too dishonest to be trusted in the position of POTUS.
Being that he is only five months into his current job, President Trump has time to learn from his mistakes and to correct course.
If he fails to do so, then come Year 2020, voters might decide that they have had enough of him. All that it would take for voters to say to Trump “You’re fired!” would be for the Democratic Party to have a 2020 presidential nominee who isn’t Hillary Clinton.
Personally, I hope that President Trump will learn from his mistakes and correct course, but I won’t hold my breath while waiting for him to do so.
