Inspired by yesterday’s post by Chuck about the importance of taking action and Dennis’s subsequent post about using your anger for more than vitriolic rhetoric, I give you some simple things you can do today.
No, I’m not asking you to attend a rally or give money or anything tough like that. I’m asking you to let your elected officials know where you stand on issues that are important to you, and you don’t even have to get out of your chair to do it. The websites for the House of Representatives and the Senate both have links that will help you send email to your Congresspeople.
Being a citizen is about more – or should be about more – than voting once every couple of years and then criticizing policies every day. No, real citizenship means that you also think about politics, every day, and act if there are issues you care about. Acting might mean that you join some kind of organization, or that you send out an e-mail or make a telephone call every once in a while. How you exactly act is not that important, what matters is that you act.
So, I encourage all of you to take a look at the list of issues Bridget compiled. Are there issues you feel strongly about? If so, contact your Representative and / or Senator. Let them know what you, their constituent, think.
And, yes, you do not even have to get out of your lazy chair.
