While they lost the race for Governor and three of the four State Senate recalls, Democrats may have won a small consolation prize. With 100% of the ballots counted, former State Senator John Lehman (D) appears to have defeated incumbent Senator Van Wanggaard (R).
The margin is less than 1,000 votes and has not been certified, but if it stands that would give the Democrats 17 seats in the 33 member State Senate.
The victory would be somewhat symbolic though as the legislature is out of session for the rest of the year. There will be 16 of the 33 seats up in November, so control could easily flip again before the legislature convenes. Republicans retained control of the State Assembly, though again that could change in November.
