Someone in the Democratic National Committee, Organizing for America or the White House needs to be fired. Point blank.
Ok, maybe I shouldn’t start with that point.
As a fairly independent observer of American Politics, it’s been both puzzling and frustrating to see the Democrats in America lose the public debate and support over important issues since Obama has taken office. The very fact that Healthcare, Democrats supposed signature issue, is reported to be ‘on the ropes’ is unfathomable to me. How on this earth can Democrats fail to sale Healthcare to the American public? Is it because some have been peddling the ‘fact’ that “America’s Healthcare system is the best in the world”?
There had been signs of the D’s lack of taking…wait for it…PR seriously way back when the battle for the Stimulus was being fought in 2009. To this day I haven’t heard a single reputable economist argue the fact that a stimulus bill was not needed. There has been legitimate argument on what should be included in the bill, but no one of great economic standing stood in the middle of 2008, when America’s economy nose dived and said:
“The fundamentals of our economy are strong. We do not need a stimulus bill.”
But yet, here we are in March of 2010 and the only thing that your average American voter (or former Governor) can tell you about the stimulus bill are falsities or facts devoid of context.
For years I have heard people say that “Republicans in America are natural sales men, it’s in their blood” – I didn’t believe them until now, after witnessing the pure ineptitude of the Democratic party to clearly spell out to people, in colloquial language why Mr Obama’s agenda matters. And for this, someone needs to be sacked.
The very fact that every time someone utters the sentence to the effect of “America has the best Healthcare in the world”, doesn’t bring a spokesperson, a press release, or Gibbs angrily debunking that brilliantly lie (that is me being deadly serious, it’s an effective tool for the R’s) is criminal.
If the White House or the Democrats are scared of frightening off independents or afraid of looking un-statesman like, are doing the President’s agenda a disservice. You need to defend what you are selling, and if that line of defence means a need to be overly aggressive with your message, then so be it.
Going on from the several months worth of Healthcare debate, I can’t tell you why America needs Healthcare reform, but I can tell you that to reform the Healthcare system will be akin to communist takeover of America – a takeover which will ensure the deaths of many white senior citizens (again I am not being sarcastic, I am being deadly serious, brilliant communications strategy by the R’s).
The Democrats need not be afraid to holla. Shout, remind everybody why American is in the economic state it is in today, remind the public why Healthcare reform is important – remind the public why they voted for you and not the otherside.
It is quite remarkable Republicans’ power with message. The fact that they walked hand in hand with George W Bush and can still be in the running to retake congress this year is remarkable. Well done for them — but what does this Republican ‘revival’ say about the Democrats?
Just a normal everyday bloke writing about films.
