Read this post at the Daily Dish by Andrew Sullivan: Atheism and Mystery.
A, in my opinion, very interesting post by Tarek Heggy at Winds of Change called “Two Historic Choices.” The situation just after the second World War, U.S., Soviet Union, South Korea and North Korea.
Jim writes (at The Impolitic) that U.S. president George W. Bush “is trying to find himself a man of substance who can become ‘War Czar’. He has approached three 4-star generals and they have turned him down.”
The always hilarious Jon Swift tries to defend Don Imus… “I think in order to avoid mistakes like this in the future, it might be helpful if blacks, women, gays (whoops! I almost wrote “faggots” by mistake!) and other oppressed groups compiled a list of offensive terms that are no longer funny. They might also want to set up a website that could be updated with new terms as they are added to the list, which pundits, comedians and shock jocks could check to make sure they aren’t saying anything that will get them fired or cause them to lose lucrative commercial endorsements. I know I would be able to breathe a lot easier if I knew what demeaning stereotypes and insults I could and could not use.”
Luckily for Imus, Dennis Sanders does a considerably better job.
As I wrote at my own blog, people are called “racist” far too easily these days. One always has to look at intent. Does Imus have a long history of being racist? Are there other indicators?
David Schraub rightfully pointed out a while ago that, if you’re not already reading Obsidian Wings you should start doing so now: a great blog. Today’s must read is this post by Hilzoy. Hilzoy writes: “In a comment on another thread, Phil asked what I thought of this op-ed on stem cell funding, by Sen. Sam Brownback. What follows is the op-ed, with my comments.” Read more at OW.
Lastly, an interesting post by John Cole at Balloon Juice: “Texas legislators are moving full speed ahead with a bill mandating elective Bible classes in the state’s public high schools that appears crafted to facilitate use of a fundamentalist Protestant curriculum.”
