Senator Scott Brown (R-MA) has taken the oath of office from VP Biden.
Not much of a quorum to see him but I am sure members have work to do.
VP Biden seemed quite friendly about it, but from what I’ve read he’s a classy guy.
Senator Kerry (who by tradition has to escort the new member from his state) looked less than thrilled to say the least.
Just to give you some references.
The last time a Republican represented Massachusetts in the US Senate was December 1978 when Jimmy Carter was President and the top TV shows were Three’s Company and Mork and Mindy. President Obama was in High School and some us were but a twinkle in the eye.
The last time a Republican was sworn in to office to represent the state would have been January 1973 when Richard Nixon was in the White House and only two current Senators (Inoyue and Byrd ) were in office. If you expand that list to 1978 then you get a total of five (adding Leahy, Lugar and Hatch).
So only 5 current members have ever served with a Massachusetts Republican.
Sort of puts it in perspective, eh ?
