At one time this morning there were more than 60 stories about Freddie Gray’s death and the aftermath listed at memeorandum.com.
We have all seen the video of Gray’s arrest and the loading of this young man into a police van.
We have all seen both the riots and the peaceful demonstrations in Baltimore following the news of Gray’s death.
And we have all heard and read the “statement of probable cause” issued by Maryland State Attorney Marilyn Mosby on Friday morning.
Some of us have already made up our minds one way or another about the Freddie Gray “case” and some of us can find plenty of corroborating “facts” and opinions to support our positions.
In the coming days and weeks, as the “case” develops further, there will probably be hundreds of additional “facts” and opinions written and published for some of us to quote and to use to further buttress our theories, judgments and viewpoints.
However, if you do not read anything else, I implore you to read a piece at The Daily Beast by Michael Daly.
In the piece, Daly writes how “cops almost saved Freddie Gray—and themselves.”
It is a poignant reminder of what could have been, what could have been prevented, what could have been saved if ordinary human beings had only listened to their better judgment, to their inner voices, to their consciences.
Daly writes:
Had they done so, Gray might still be alive. The six cops might still be out on patrol. The city of Baltimore might have been spared a riot. And Maryland might have gone ahead with a day to honor the first responders who gave their lives seeking to keep others safe.
