It’s dangerous to assume that we can actually see the future by only looking at the technological advances we’ve made so far.
– Octavia Butler (1947 – 2006), Hugo and Nebula award winning science fiction author
I thought of those words that Ms. Butler made at panel discussion at UCLA in 2002 as I watched the MSNBC Morning Joe crew debate the Citigroup bailout and the economy in general today. In the myriad of discussions that our very shaky economy has generated, many of...

There is no dispute that fossil fuels are finite. It took millions upon millions of years to give us the oil reserves we have today. And we aren’t exactly replenishing the oil supply, unless we halt all life on this fine planet of hours (including mankind), break down into our carbon and hydrogen components over millions upon millions of years in order to form oil. Then we can all come back and fill up our automobiles! Acceptable and realistic, eh?
Transhumanist Michael Anissimov recently...

In September of this year, the American Psychological Association reversed a longstanding policy by voting to prohibit its members from participating in interrogations or acting in an advisory capacity at Guantánamo Bay and elsewhere after revelations that some psychologists have been involved in so-called intensive interrogation sessions. The ban belatedly brings the APA into line with the American Medical Association and American Psychiatric Association.
In a recent New York Times op-ed piece,...

I voted for Bob Barr. I gave my reasons. I stand by my reasons. But I have to say it. As a black man. As an American…
WOW!
I’m still having a hard time digesting this win for Barack Hussein Obama; I mean President-Elect Barack Hussein Obama. WOW! I just got off the phone with my grandparents. It wasn’t much of a conversation. Just many tears and exclamations on how great America is. My parents, former Black Panthers, who said many times that “white people will never...

“Elite” Senator Barack Obama has taken a cue from “Elite” Senator John McCain to kick certain “Elite” mainstream media off his plane. The “Elite” MSM body count:
“Elite” Senator John McCain: Time Magazine and New York Times.
“Elite” Senator Barack Obama: Washington Times, New York Post, and Dallas Morning News.
“Elite” Washington Times Executive Editor John Solomon was quite peeved by “Elite” Senator...

Hello readers, supporters, naysayers, and enemies!
The Moderate Voice will be undergoing a design change tonight (10/26/08) from 8:30pm EDT to 11:30pm EDT. This is not a complete overhaul of the site design. It is more of an enhancement that will allow an increased focus on the articles and standardize the look of the site. If you come to the site during this period, you will be greeted with a very polite message telling you to get outta here! That was a joke.
Thank you very much for your continued...

On my way to Clarkesville, Georgia this morning to visit a old college buddy I haven’t seen in 10 years, I heard Gordon Lightfoot’s “If You Could Read My Mind” on the radio. I usually listen to MP3s or satellite radio while traveling, but for some reason I just turned on the standard radio this time. I was a little past Gainesville, Georgia when Lightfoot’s song came on. Music is amazing. It has the ability to turn a mundane situation into much more. The rural splendor...

DVICE has an informative and interactive article called Voting Machines in the USA. They take a look at all the states in the union and see how error-prone and “hackable” the machines are. They also give you the technology each state has deployed in their voting machines.
Here in Georgia we are 100% electronic. Since I voted early, I found the machines here very easy to use and didn’t have one problem. But I’m a guy that helps manage a datacenter with 5000+ servers so...

Today I stood in line in Lawrenceville, Georgia for 2 hours and 15 minutes to cast my early vote in Election ‘08. I’d seen and heard enough this presidential election season to last me the next three presidential election seasons. As I stood there in line, I thought about the issues, the controversies, the slop, the unreal, the surreal, the joy, the passion, the sadness, and the overall tone of the primaries and general election. So when it was my turn to fulfill my civic duty, I...

Just seen on MSNBC via The Rachel Maddow show, Senator Obama is leaving the campaign trail due to his grandmother’s failing health:
Obama to take break to see sick grandmother
He is scheduled to fly to Hawaii Thursday and Friday to visit her
From The Associated Press
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Democrat presidential candidate Barack Obama is canceling nearly all his campaign events Thursday and Friday to fly to Hawaii to visit his suddenly ill 85-year-old grandmother, his spokesman said.

For those in the blogosphere, Pundit-Ville, and regular Joe and Jane Land who still believe and keep spreading that black folks in America are “racist” for overwhelmingly supporting Senator Barack Obama in Election ‘08, I have two words for you:
PROVE IT!
You prove that black people’s supposed racism is harming a white, wealthy, respected, former Navy pilot, a Senator by the name of John McCain. Show me how his life is being affected negatively because of black folks’...

GEORGIA REPRESENTATIVE JOHN LEWIS
I have great respect for Georgia Congressman and civil rights icon John Lewis. When your a growing up as a black child, Representative John Lewis is a name you hear repeatedly when the phrase “civil rights” is uttered. But I also have some disdain for the “Old Empire” of civil rights that John Lewis belongs to. Many of them are only reactionary. They wait for a racial incident and then pounce with full claws out. But when it comes to...

Color me amazed at the exchanges between Senator McCain and two supporters (well, I don’t know if they will support him after this; thanks to Allahpundit at Hot Air for the video):
I’m 34 years old. So I haven’t been around long enough to see many presidential elections. But has this ever happened before with a presidential candidate; where he/she rhetorically rips the spine out of one or more supporters on national television? That’s what McCain did in the video clip....

Since Governor Sarah Palin has blasted on the scene, I’ve been wondering how she would have done if she were running in the Republican primary. She would have stuck out like a sore big toe among that super-dull crowd of McCain, Thompson, Giuliani, Romney, and others (well Mike Huckabee was not that dull). Can you imagine the “Sarahcuda” on the debate stage hurling zingers at those good ol’ boys? And could she really have won the Republican Party nomination?
And speaking...

Hello TMV readers!
Around 1am EST/10pm PDT tonight, we will be performing an upgrade to the newest incarnation of Wordpress. The site will be very slow to down for approximately 1 hour. If we run into problems, we’ll just back out and use what we have now. We’re not expecting a problem though.
This is phase 1 of changes occurring to the site. You’ll see little difference (maybe a slight speed increase). Phase 2 involves improving the readability of The Moderate Voice by doing...

When my wife found out that Gwen Ifill will be the moderator for tomorrow’s vice presidential debate between Senator Joe Biden and Governor Sarah Palin, she exclaimed:
The lady that wrote that Essence piece? That’s going to cause a problem with the Right since she’s an Obama girl like me!
My wife was referring to a recent article in Essence magazine in which Gwen Ifill gave the Obamas’ some serious love. Cover below:
I read the article and let’s just say she does...

OPTIMIZATION ERROR!!
You really ever look at how you drive your car to a destination? Not necessarily how you handle the vehicle but how you handle the situations going from point A to B. I know I’m a one-hand eater/driver in my car. I’ll set up a bag of fresh onion rings (yes FRESH) in the passenger seat, send the ol’ right hand into the bag, and pop the tasty fried rings into my mouth while ol’ lefty is handling the car. Sometimes this makes me do things like merging...

With the McCain campaign’s recent “lipstick on a pig” manufactured outrage and terrible misrepresented sex education ad against Obama coupled with the Obama campaign’s equally silly “McCain can’t e-mail” ad, I just have to say this:
The is no honor among thieves…
The McCain campaign stole the “change” mantra and the Obama campaign stole the “experience” mantra. And now they are trying to out silly each other. Punditry says...

There were time, when I was a wee lad, my father and I tried to make the messes we made in the garage (working on something) look better by scooting boxes around, throwing a sheet over an obscure hunk of metal, etc. And I remember clear as day, my mother saying to both of us many times:
You can’t put lipstick on a pig…
Come to think of it, my grandparents were fond of saying that old American phrase. Pigs are recognized as just plain ugly no matter what. And that phrase just says it...

My “ultra-conservative till since the Great Wall” (his words) neighbor unveiled his new bumper sticker this morning to me. “Sarah all the way, baby!”, he exclaimed with a big grin on his face. “What happened to McCain?”, I asked. His reply:
McCain who? All my wife and I see is Sarah Palin. She can run with Donald Duck for all I care!
I’m almost 35 years old. I voted in my first presidential election back...

Senator Obama slips up and says “my Muslim faith” in an interview with George Stephanopoulus:
http://web.israelinsider.com/Articles/Politics/13078.htm
While Israel Insider has issues with Senator Obama, the video doesn’t lie:
And here’s the transcript:
STEPHANOPOULOS: You mention your Christian faith. Yesterday you took off after the Republicans for suggesting you have Muslim connections. Just a few minutes ago, Rick Davis, John McCain’s campaign manager, said they’ve...

Palin overload. Community organizer controversy. The “we only have small town values” Republicans. Barack “Mr. Stadium for The Win” Obama”. Democrats “We Love Everyone” views. Media criticism. Etc…
ENOUGH!
I’m going to carry things back to 1967, musically-speaking, with a legendary musician, composer, and producer: Sergio Mendes. As a piano player that grew listening to Sergio Mendes all the time (my parents were huge fans), I’ve...

My better half is walking around the house wearing the t-shirt you see above along with her “What Me Worry” sweatshorts (talk about a weird yet appropriate combination). She is an unabashed and very sane Obama supporter (not Obamabot in the slightest). When I asked her why she bought the t-shirt, she said:
It’s all in good fun. Win or lose, this presidential election season is just full of grade-A entertainment!
Part of me is ecstatic that she...
