An Old Soldier Takes A Trip To The Past
By George Stantis
I am 83 years old, and I’ve taken lots of trips.

I was on my way to Washington, D.C., to see the national memorial dedicated to those who served in World War II. Already, it was bringing back those days, and emotions I thought had been erased by the passage of time.
At last, on May 5, 1945, the guns were silent....

TMV Editor’s note: This week’s American Idol extravaganza stirred up strong, highly emotional feelings on the part of each singer’s supporters. Here in San Diego, there was a huge rally for San Diego contender Adam Lambert that was used in televising the final show, as the producers cut to shots of his hometown crowd. A local singer elicited the same response as a local sports team. Go to THIS LINK on the new San Diego News Network site to read this account of the rally. The blond...

Good Luck on Sweeping Health Care Reform Mr President
by Bill Steigerwald
Saying that America’s semi-private, semi-public health care system needs a complete overhaul, President Obama last week challenged Congress to send him a health care reform bill he can sign by the end of the year. The president said that a new health care system would have to meet three strict criteria, however: it’d have to lower costs, allow patients to choose their own doctors and provide affordable, quality care...

Editor’s Note: After the massive defeat of his budget proposals at the polls Tuesday, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said he got the voters’ message loud and clear — as the state now careens into yet a new stage of crisis and expected draconian service cuts and layoffs. Conservatives see several losers in this vote. Talk show host Michael Reagan offers this perspective:

The Cheney Doctrine
by Will Durst
I’m sick of torture. And the fact that we’re one of the countries way up there on the J.D. Powers annual “torture reliability” list makes me unwell as well. As does talking AROUND torture. What this country needs is an up-front national referendum on whether we should or shouldn’t be torturing people.
Oh wait. That’s right, we did have one.
Last November 4th.
These aren’t your normal, ordinary everyday forms of torture we’re talking about either:...

The news that conservative talker Michael Savage was on a list and banned from Great Britain brought somewhat predictable responses: conservatives were outraged and some liberals said it serves him right. But there were some on both sides who wondered if anything Savage said qualified him to be on a list with terrorists and others. In this Guest Voice, conservative writers Floyd and Mary Beth Brown argue that Savage didn’t deserve it and that it’s a free speech issue the Obama administration...

UPDATE: The Washington Post reports that some Republicans are not happy about Dick Cheney’s blasts a day (going after the Obama administration, saying the country is less safe, saying Rush Limbaugh is more of a Republican than Colin Powell and basically suggesting that moderates who share Powell’s views should take a hike from the GOP):
Cheney...

GOP’s Get Out Of Jail Free Card: Charlie Crist
by Dalitso Njolinjo
Let me say from the start that Charlie Crist will be a problem for the Democratic Party. Team Obama and Governor/ Chairman Kaine have taken great steps to paint the face Republican Party to resemble individuals such as Rush Limbaugh, George Bush and Dick Chaney but Charlie Crist does not fit snugly into that mode. Don’t get it confused, he is a pretty solid conservative, but he is also a conservative with an ear for common...
