The Days After 9/11 in New York City
by Martha Randolph Carr
The events on 9/11 at the Pentagon, in a field in Shanksville, PA and in Manhattan that claimed nearly 3,000 lives from the age of two to 85 were so enormous they gave off a ripple effect we still feel today. Even as life returns to a new state of normal with a routine that takes into account longer airport lines with ever-invasive searches or news reports of possible terrorist attacks, we still feel the pain that so few caused so many.
Just...

The Truth Will Out
by Michael Reagan
No matter what the record shows, there will always be the nay-sayers who have no trouble ignoring facts as obvious as the noses on their faces.
Sunday was the 10th anniversary of the horror we call simply by the numerals that mark its point in time. Anyone who watched the minute-by-minute film record of the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center buildings broadcast by cable networks such as Fox, MSNBC and CNN — and had any doubts about what...

Why the Rush To Pass the American Jobs Act?
by Susan Stamper Brown
As the Democratic National Committee (DNC) launches an ad campaign in battleground states to promote rapid passage of President Barack Obama’s “American Jobs Act,” I cannot help but to ask, “Why the rush, Mr. President?”
While proposed payroll tax cuts would be useful to hard-working coupon-clipping Americans, common sense suggests that something is wrong, if, during a Joint Session of Congress, the president...

Should The Law Stand Up For Ugly People?
Tyrades! By Danny Tyree
If you have the sort of face that only a mother could love, you may not be surprised by the ugly truths documented by Daniel Hamermesh.
Hamermesh, a University of Texas at Austin economist and author of “Beauty Pays,” puts forth the provocative proposition that “ugly people” deserve to be legally protected in the same way that individuals are protected on the basis of race, religion, disability, etc.
Hamermesh...

9/11 And Its Great Transformations
by Cliff Schecter
On September 11th, 2001, on what was a perfect morning-right up until the very moment a Boeing 767-223-ER slammed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center, I stood on the corner of Delancey and Ridge Streets in downtown Manhattan.
I was working on an election campaign – it was primary day in New York – and little did I realize that politics, culture and our entire trajectory as a nation was about to change forever. I had been...

Red-Meat Slam Dance
Raging Moderate, by Will Durst
A full complement of Republican presidential candidates gathered for the battle royale at the Ronald Reagan Library in Seamy (Simi) Valley, Calif. And though he was only there in spirit, the Great Communicator could easily have supplied the power for the entire proceedings had the networks harnessed him spinning in his grave like a rotisserie chicken in the middle of a power surge.
The eight challengers for his mantle didn’t just break the...

Obama is the Best Republican President Since Lincoln
by Tina Dupuy
There was a 90 percent top marginal tax rate under President Dwight Eisenhower. Ronald Reagan raised taxes nearly every year he was in office and still managed to quadruple the national debt. Teddy Roosevelt was an anti-business “trust buster” who snatched Yosemite away from private profits. Gerald Ford ended a long pointless war in Vietnam, even though pontificators like Pat Buchanan claim we could have won…eventually....

Reagan Would Not Be Invited to the GOP Tea Party
by Karl Frisch
At last night’s debate of 2012 Republican White House hopefuls at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, the former movie actor and president was name-dropped like a top Hollywood agent during awards season.
I guess you could say the endless Reagan-worshiping is the modern GOP equivalent of praying to a false golden idol.
Since Republicans took control of the House of Representatives in January following the midterm elections,...
